    Johannes (Jan) JM Velterop

Originally a marine geologist, he has worked in the publishing industry for nearly 30 years and has a wealth of experience, especially with scientific journal publishing.

Until recently he was the publisher of BioMed Central Group, the pre-eminent open access publisher. Throughout the ‘90s, he was the Managing Director of Academic Press Limited, where he was responsible for taking forward the highly successful and innovative IDEAL project which was one of the first e-journal initiatives and now provides thousands of libraries with access to the content of Academic Press journals.

He has also held high profile positions at Macmillan Publishers where he was the Publishing Director of Nature Publishing Group and President of Nature Inc, and at the Dutch Media Group, Wegener, where he was the Managing Director of one of their newspaper titles. Following his postgraduate study in marine geology, he started his publishing career at Elsevier in Amste rdam as Acquisitions Editor responsible for a number of Books & Journals publishing programmes in various disciplines.

In addition to the above he has worked as a consultant within the scientific publishing and information industries, and he is now consulting again, with a particular focus on open access publishing and on the issue of dealing with the information overload.
