BIREME and NLM: 38 years of cooperation present in the ICML9
The National Library of Medicine (NLM) and BIREME have a cooperation partnership of 38 years, that results in several joint efforts and the development of information sources that compose the Virtual Health Library (VHL). This cooperation will also be expressed during the 9th.World Congress on Health Information and Libraries (ICML9/CRICS7), in September, in Salvador. NLM offered BIREME the exhibit: Odyssey of knowledge: medieval manuscripts and early printed books from the National Library of Medicine. Description of the exhibit.
This presentation was created to the International Society for the History of Medicine on its 39º International Congress of Medicine History, in Bari, in Italy.
Modern medicine has deep roots in three main civilizations: the Greek tradition, the Christianity concepts and the contributions of the Arab world. Most of this knowledge was condensed in the Middle Age and transformed in texts that formated the current medicine. These old manuscripts are part of the exhibit in the ICML9.
A true odyssey of rarities from two thousand years, shows the history of medicine that crossed the Mediterranean Sea and occupied Europe. Composed of 10 posters with 21 manuscripts, the exhibit brings what is more rewarded in NLM in terms of historical documents.
After the ICML9, BIREME will organize itinerant exhibitions of Odyssey of knowledge in other Brazilian states and in the Latin America and the Caribbean countries.
NLM also supports at ICML9:
- Support projects to the publication of congress annals and making viable simultaneous translation.
- Cooperation between BIREME and NLM also includes a joint project in the area of Information and Knoledge Management, PAHO (IKM), to develop the NLM Training Program (information of the course) especially defined to the professionals of the documentation centers and information of PAHO. This course will be one of the activities prior to the 4th. Regional Coordination Meeting of the VHL (BVS4), in 17th September, in Salvador, Bahia.
