Abel L. Packer convida os participantes do MLA para o ICML9

Good morning!

It is an honor for me to be here to invite you to participate in the next International Congress on Medical Librarianship - number 9 - that will take place for the first time in Latin America, in the resort city of Salvador, state of Bahia, Brazil, September 2005.

As the Director of BIREME - Latin American and Caribbean Center on Health Sciences Information responsible for organizing the ICML we represent the cooperative work involving about 1700 health related libraries and documentation centers from all the countries.

In the name of this network and in particular in the name of Bireme team I would like to thank IFLA and in particular MLA for all the support and in particular the President Mrs Patricia Thibodeau for giving me the opportunity to extend to all you this invitation and express to you how it is important for us.

BIREME is a center of the PAHO/WHO, established in Brazil in 1967 under an agreement with the Brazilian Government and the cooperation of NLM. During these 37 years we worked and networked people and institutions to develop our capacity in deal with health sciences information, to support research, education, healthcare and policy making

The operation of our network has been facilitated in the last years with the concourse of Internet where we promote the Virtual Health Library framework to converge national information producers, intermediaries and users.

We meet the members of our network every two years in our Regional Congress on Health Sciences Ð CRICS. The last CRICS took place in Puebla, Mexico with about 1000 participants. The next CRICS Ð 7 will be encapsulated by ICML 9.

Having the opportunity to host and organize the ICML9 we are aware that we face a big challenge. We will use all the experience we accumulated in the last 14 years with the operation of our regional congress and we also count with the international cooperation to have a successful ICML Congress.

But most important, we know that hosting and to organizing the ICML we have an unique opportunity to promote a massive interchange of experiences, solutions, knowledge, ideas and information among health sciences librarians from all the world and in particular with you from United States.

It will contribute to increase our vision and the knowledge as information professionals on the major aspects that drive todayÕs development of the medical librarianship.

In brief, increase our capacity to contribute to the development of health.

Around these challenges we defined the main thematic subject of the ICML to be Commitment to Equity in order to signal clearly our goal to lessen information and knowledge divide and towards the democratization of the access to information and knowledge as an essential condition for the development of health.

Salvador is a beautiful city in the north-east coast of Brazil, probably one of the most musical and dancing cities in the world, with a multiracial and friendly population, with a rich culinary and with a Portuguese colonial architecture in downtown.

And Salvador has a nice sea with dozens of beaches that extends north and south all over the coast of Bahia. In addition, to its beauty and cultural environment, Salvador is a preferred site for national and international congress due its very well developed hotel infrastructure and due to the fact that it is a secure city for working and tourism.

Let us see one minute animation on Salvador. Please, visit the ICML stand just in the entry of the entrance of the congress.

Again, I would like to thank the MLA for give us this opportunity. Thank you very much and hope to see you in Salvador in September 2005.
