Dr Anca Dumitrescu graduated as medical doctor from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Bucharest, Romania, in 1983. In 1992, she was board certified as specialist in Environmental Health by the same University. After several years of work as general practitioner and public health specialist for the local authority, she joined the Romanian Ministry of Health as Coordinator of the National Programme on Environmental Health. From 1999 until 2000, Dr Dumitrescu served as member of the WHO Standing Committee of the Regional Committee for Europe. Since 2000, she is the Director, Division of Information, Evidence and Communication of the WHO Regional Office for Europe (Copenhagen, Denmark). Dr Dumitrescu is mainly responsible for managing health information for policy makers in the WHO European Region. This includes describing the health of populations in the Region and interpreting it, and providing evidence that can be useful for policy making processes in the Member States. One of the projects under her supervision is the web-based ”Health Evidence Network & quot; launched in 2003. It provides short answers to the questions raised by public health policy makers, as well as access to databases and policy documents of other organizations. Dr Dumitrescu looks for developing closer relations between those producing information/evidence and policy makers using varied means of dissemination and engagement in policy dialogue.
