P141 - Tropical Medicine in Bahia from 1500 to 1808

This project aims to investigate the history of Tropical Medicine in Bahia during the empirical period, which goes from 1500 to 1808, year of foundation of medical education. This period, characterized as indigenous, African and Jesuitical, was marked by a 'chusma heteróclita de curandeiros'; and the Medicine was largely practiced by the pagés, who empirically discovered the effects of our medicinal plants. Having the work of CALDAS CONI (1952) as theoretical reference, where the history of ideas, facts and lives was reported, it is possible to find the triple aspect by which the present work, interpretative of the gold period of Medicine in Bahia, was selected. The methodology to be employed is that of bibliographical review of the time, through historical libraries such as State Central Library of Bahia, the Library of the Historical and Geographical Institute of Bahia, the existing collection in the Monasteries and Churches in Bahia, especially the Memorial of the Faculty of Medicine of Bahia at Terreiro de Jesus. There will also be questionnaires, interviews and opinions of local historians. The expected result is to recall the scientific memory of Bahia in the area of Tropical Medicine since the early times, considered a scientific field of knowledge.
