METHODS: Journals were selected from LILACS source. The selection of the journals was based on the title, periodicity and access to the issue. As inclusion criteria, journals that contemplate all items concerning to the title, periodicity, and access, were submitted to the content analysis of their papers. It was done the characterization of the papers in surgical, non-surgical and others; as well as original, experimental or clinical, and review; quantification of the surgical paper pages, and the characterization of the publisher process and difusion. Following this initial phase, it was analyzed more recent number from that selected journals to identify t he terminology and attributions adopted by the editors from each journal to designate responsibility for the content and the style of the journal.
RESULTS: It was selected 30 journals, just 23 had 10% or more of the surgical papers from 1998 a 2000. Twenty-three selected journals published 4.241 papers and 39% was surgical; just 4% of the journals published 50% and more surgical papers, and 90% was original. In 1497 original surgical papers, 88% is related to human being. 74% of original papers in human being are in 14 journals, in which it is represented for 80 to 100% of the content. Original papers in animals are represented in17 journals, varying since 1% to 84%. 31% of 28.110 pages was dedicated to surgical papers. Taken togheter, publisher process characteristics and diffusion, the periodicity and regularity, varying from 10 to 90 years, prove that these journals are consolidated, maintained mainly by the societies. The diffusion, varying from 1.000 to 15.000 issues, and visibility indicators ar e significatives of credibility. Distribution is destinate for free to the associated persons (8); by signature (9); combination of both (5); distribution to the associated and interchange between institutions (3). Funding captation to maintain the journal was almost based on publicities. Just 17% journals cited financial support and partial institutional subvention. Concerning to the information sources, it was observed that 39% of journals are in SciELO. In the subsequent phase, the adopted terminology for the editorial board in each journal was collected showing the diversification of the terms for similar functions. It was identified 74 terms, classified in five categories, assigning activities exerted by the editorial board members, involved in the journal production and diffusion. Under the editorial perspective, printed or electronic, the categorization of the different phases of the process provided subsidies to elaborate the 'Organogram of the scientific periodical'. The interpretation of the activit ies and responsibilities of each member in the organogram is described in the 'Profile and responsibilities of the editorial board members'. To insert each member of the editorial board, according to its respective responsibility, it was possible to elaborate the 'Paper fluxogram'.
CONCLUSIONS: The number of surgical papers published in brazilian journals is not representative compared to the non-surgical papers. All 23 evaluated journals are consolidate concerning to the existence time and they have credibility warranted by periodicity, maintained by representative societies of the scientific comunity, with non-governmental fundings. Our data showed that scientific production published in Brazil has been more visible and accessible to the comunity. There is no uniformity to designate terms and attributions for the members of the editorial board in the studied journals. Recommendations are presented for the journal organogram and the article fluxogram.
