P37 - Emerging trends in the information profession to meet the needs of organizations in a changing environment: issues and challenges for developing countries

The information environment has changed significantly over the years. With the advent of the Internet, extensive use of technology, digitization and the availability of information in many new formats. This change has had an effect on the focus, needs and expectations of organizations and on the information profession.
The growth of new knowledge as part of the information explosion requires workers and organizations to keep abreast of current trends in their particular fields. In view of the fact that the management of information has been a key function in librarianship, it is evident that such skills must be applied if the changing needs of organizations are to be met effectively.
Despite the constraints that developing countries face with respect to the information gap between themselves and the more developed countries, priorities can be established to promote the development of critical skills to bridge this gap. This poster highlights the core competencies which information professionals must develop such areas as education and training, strategic direction, information literacy and knowledge management, as they are crucial in meet the needs in a changing environment.
